Designed to cater for a busy family, this beautifully proportioned modern kitchen took a pivotal role in the major renovation of a large bungalow in Remuera.

The owners’ brief was for a much larger space that the existing kitchen occupied, with an enhanced connection to the outdoor living space, an island with seating for at least four, and a clean, but not too clinical aesthetic.

Working closely with his clients' architect, our designer asked for a narrow, wall-to-wall picture window to be inserted into one of the walls. This window not only let in more light, but also gave a glimpse out to a classic scoria boundary wall and a small garden that would in time, be planted out.

The ovens, pantry, fridge and storage are all housed in tall white cabinetry that has been sunk into the back wall and bulkhead above, borrowing internal space from an adjacent room. This has the effect of making the cabinetry ‘disappear’ into the wall.

The colour and material palettes were kept simple, as per the clients' request. Clean white cabinetry sits next to rich, chocolate-stained American oak, with a flash of metallic bronze paintwork on the overhead cabinetry above the wide picture window.

The two different benchtop materials reflect their functions — hard-wearing stainless steel along the worktop, and a softer Caesarstone engineered stone, with subtle marble veining on the island, where the family gather for breakfast.

To finish the kitchen off, the designer integrated hidden LED strip lighting into the negative detailing above the cabinetry and also around the toekicks, just above the floor.
